Family Concert - March 2008

Family Concert - 29th March 2008

On a chilly Saturday morning, the last in March, children, some as young as a few months (and others disguised as parents!) flocked to the Aisher Hall at Sevenoaks School. After searching for seats with the best view of all the exciting instruments, we settled down and waited with anticipation for the concert to begin. There was a great deal of pointing from the younger members of the audience as they spotted instruments they recognized and occasionally a face too… “Mummy… LOOK …its Bethan!”
The orchestral music in the first half was great, a varied and exciting whirlwind musical tour of the world, with interludes from Darrell Davison the conductor to give a background to the pieces being played. The children quickly became involved when they were invited to participate in one of the first pieces as percussion players; holding bunches of keys and tapping them in time with the rhythm – surprisingly challenging and very effective en masse! We traveled from Hungary, Turkey and Greece to Arabia, Russia and even Japan. The first part ended with a wonderful piece called “Braziliana” which had everybody wanting to join in.

As soon the second part began, it became apparent that this was entirely different. The Classic Buskers made their entrance and kept us enthralled as they galloped through a global tour of well known tunes, delighting the audience with their weird and wonderful instruments, including some made from clogs, hosepipes and other interesting items! Their enthusiasm was infectious and their antics kept us all in stitches, “Mummy, it’s the same man… but look, he’s wearing a dress now!” The kids loved every minute and came away with a real sense of how much fun instruments and music could be.

Kathy Taylor, with help from Ben (aged 6) and Hannah(4)!
