Russian Classics - 17-05-2009

Stag Theatre - 7.30pm

This concert is covered by our Season Ticket scheme. Single tickets (£12, £11 concessions, £1 Under 16s) from the Stag Box Office (01732 450175) from 16th April 2009.

A programme of great Russian romantic music, some well-known and some less so, but all full of melody and ending with a bang!

Rimsky-Korsakov: Dubinushka
Colourful orchestral work based on folk song and inspired by revolution

Liadov: Baba Yaga, Op 56; Kikimora, Op 63
Colourful and imaginative pieces from a master of music fairy tales

Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No 1 in F sharp minor
A really wonderful piece of music, instantly recognisable as Rachmaninov, with big tunes, rich orchestration, and a rather challenging part for the pianist! Unjustly overshadowed by its two successors. If you don't know it, now's your chance to hear it! The soloist will be young Romanian Madalina Rusu, recent winner of the Croydon Concerto Competition, among others.

Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 2 in C minor - 'Little Russian'
The shortest of Tchaikovsky's canon, but so named because it was written in the Ukraine ('Little Russia') and it uses folk songs from the area

Tchaikovsky: 1812 Overture
Surely needs no comment!
